Researchers in the CODES project
have developed the first practical system for digital signature based on error-correcting codes. Safety of the system could be proved, relative to difficult problems in coding theory: decode a linear code and distinguish a Goppa code from a random code. The resulting signatures are very short, less than 100 bits. For an equivalent safety level, the best conventional method (elliptic curves) does not go below 320 bits, and the best special-purpose system (Quartz) is limited to 128 bits. For more details.
