Philippe Flajolet is an invited speaker at the International Congress of Mathematicians that takes place in Beijing August 20 to 28. His survey paper "Singular Combinatorics"
shows how properties of generating functions at singularities encode valuable information regarding asymptotic countig and limit probability distributions present in large random structures.

J-F. Gerbeau,(project M3N), T. Lelièvre et C. Lebris (ENPC) have been jointly awarded the CS 2002 prize in Applied Mathematics for their research on modelling and simulating the behavior of liquid metal in presence of a magnetic field.
In the area of signal and image processing, the CS 2002 prize has been awarded to L. Cohen , CNRS, for his work on active contours and deformable models, research carried out partly in cooperation with INRIA.

27/06/02
INRIA's project teams are well represented this year at SIGGRAPH 2002 with a strong presence in the sessions on Parameterization and Meshes (3 papers), Shadows, Translucency, and Visibility (2 papers) et Texture Synthesis . Furthermore, Marie-Paule Cani chairs the Soft Things session

Jean-Charles Faugère , CNRS, member of the team SPACES has managed to break the first HFE (Hidden Field Equations) challenge thanks to his very efficient implementation of Groebnerbases F5/2.
This success is a first result of the Polycript initiative funded by the ministry of research.

02/02/02
A new software tool, TAPENADE, dedicated to automatic differentiation is made available by the TROPICS project as a server. Given any Fortran 77 (and soon Fortran 95) program, this web service builds and returns the differentiated program that computes either the sensitivity ( forward mode) or the gradient (reverse mode).

25/02/02
Raymond Namyst releases PM2, a joint project of LIP and LIFL . PM2 is a distributed multithreaded environment designed to efficiently support irregular parallel applications on distributed architectures

21/01/02
André Seznec and Nicolas Sendrier release HAVEGE
(HArdware Volatile Entropy Gathering and Expansion), a user-level software random number generator that exploits modifications in the internal hardware states of the computer as a source of uncertainty.
