Since August 2006 it has been consistently ranked number 1 among 142 programmes on the Computer Go Server. MoGo is currently one of the very best virtual Go players. VISAGES, the new INRIA-Inserm joint project-team, combines medical knowledge and applied mathematics and is devoted to developing decision support tools that can select the most relevant information from a collection of images, particularly in the field of head and neck pathologies. INRIA met with success in several of its research projects in 2005. Five of its scientists received a major award and one of them was elected to the Academy of Sciences. By an order of the President of the Republic signed on May 2, 2006 and published in the Official Journal on May 3, Michel Cosnard has been named as Chairman of INRIA. He is a Professor at the Polytechnic School of the University of Nice-Sophia Antipolis, Director of the INRIA Sophia Antipolis research unit and member of the board of the “Communicating Secured Solutions” cluster in the Provence Alpes Côte d'Azur region. He succeeds Gilles Kahn who passed away on February 9, 2006.

2005 Activity Report:

The 2005 annual report of INRIA's teams and project-teams (Raweb) is available on line. Raweb presents the research activities of the institute's 170 teams and project-teams in many formats. This is the twelfth consecutive year that INRIA has published Raweb, which groups together its “on line science report” with 1,400 activity reports and 44,000 pages containing information on, and weblinks to, the various research material produced by the institute.

Software for Fast Identification of Pirated Images:

Fighting pirated images is vital for photo agencies that earn their living from copyrights. The associate team EFF2, which brings together researchers from the TEXMEX project-team in Rennes and Icelandic researchers, has found a fast and efficient way for agencies to know if certain suspicious images come from their data banks or not. On the Road to Discovery:

Véronique Cortier, a CNRS Junior Research Scientist in the CASSIS project-team (INRIA Lorraine), co-authored the book "Sur les chemins de la découverte" (On the Road to Discovery) with fourteen winners of the Thesis Prize awarded by the French newspaper Le Monde. The book is intended for the layman and provides an overview of the authors' work ranging from the environment to molecules, via the virtual world and cryptography, Véronique Cortier's specialist field. "Researchers at School" operation:

From October 10 to 22, 2005, INRIA Futurs took part in the Researchers at School operation as part of the Science Fair. Over 50 researchers visited schools in the Nord-Pas-de-Calais region to talk about what they do. These visits also provided the opportunity for the researchers to invite pupils to enter the School of the Future” competition.
