The forum launched a social debate that explored ICSTs from many different angles through a series of lectures that took place in a highly festive atmosphere. Code source, the weekly publication, takes a closer look at the event in its special issue - Year 2007.

What do bibliometric indicators tell us about scientific output?

Bibliometric indicators enjoy a certain following in the scientific community and are used to assess researchers and institutions or to compare the performances of European research systems. Admittedly, these indicators have their uses, but they often point towards a situation that is far removed from the reality they are supposed to describe. INRIA's evaluation committee studying this problem and has set up a think-tank. Its coordinator gives us a low-down of its results. Facilitating and improving virtual collaborations was the task Christophe Chaillou, researcher at INRIA (project-team ALCOVE), and Professor Pan Chunhong set themselves. At LIAMA in Beijing, they are working on "new representations of users mixing avatar and video". More...

Digital watermarking - invisible, robust and secure:

Digital watermarking, for images, video, audio or software source codes, is used to hide messages in a host file in a non perceptible manner. For more than ten years, researchers have been studying the perceptibility criteria and robustness of watermarking, but very few have focussed on the security aspect.Teddy Furon (project TEMICS) has analysed standard digital watermarking techniques and he is now striving to find new watermarking techniques that will ensure greater security. 2007: An exceptional year full of promise and off to a great start already!

On 3 January 1967, Act No. 67-7 went into effect in France. It laid out the objectives of the Plan Calcul, aimed at developing research and industrial activities in computer science fields. The legislation also called for the creation of an institute for research in computer science and control, giving rise to IRIA, later to become INRIA. The Institute has played a major role in the expansion of information and communication science and technology, and has influenced the information revolution. Now 40 years old, INRIA still has all the vitality of its early days. January is just getting started and there are already plenty of events and announcements. More...
