Objectives:

The goal of this school is to make evidence of the problems arising with numerical computations using floating-point arithmetic (roundoff error, limited precision, underflow or overflow, etc) and to propose some new tools on this topic, in particular an initial formation to the MPFR library for floating-point computation in arbitrary precision.

Contrary to integer-only computations, the computations involving floating-point numbers are by essence inexact. It is therefore crucial to control a priori or a posteriori the roundoff errors made in a given computation, independently from the errors due to the numerical scheme used (meshing, polynomial approximation, truncation). We will present several solutions enabling one to control those roundoff errors (interval arithmetic, arbitrary precision, stochastic methods, etc). Among those methods, a focus will be made on the MPFR library.

The main objective is that, at the end of the school, the participants will obtain the necessary initial knowledge enabling them to master by themselves the use of the MPFR library to solve their own problems encountered in their work. This will be achieved via practical sessions with computer, which will allow a real mastering of this library, through the resolution of sample problems. An open session is also planned: its aim is to (try to) use MPFR on real problems encountered by the participants in their engineer or researcher work. (It is highly recommended that the participants bring such problems with them, and if possible send them to the organizers in advance.)

Audience:

This school is especially dedicated to engineers or researchers, either from public institutions or private companies.
