INRIA recently became an affiliate of Aupelf-Uref, the francophone agency for higher education and research. The Institute hopes thus to play a more active role in French-speaking scientific exchanges, to help developing countries and to spread results of French research. Within this framework, several joint projects are planned with Aupelf-Uref: seconding an INRIA researcher to Aupelf-Uref, cooperative projects with Vietnam and China, participating in Aupelf-Uref's activities. For its part, the francophone agency will participate financially in the organization of Cari '98, the African conference on computer research.
A new firm has joined the club of INRIA technology companies. Tak' Asic, created in 1991 by researchers from INRIA, is a leader in the French market for the development of complex functions in the area of micro-electronics. Active in the multimedia sector, the company specializes in image processing and communication packages.
