Research Initiatives from the Scientific Management

INRIA's scientific management has financed 9 research initiatives on account of the call for proposals of 1997.

Supported by the research projects that remain the main basis of the present INRIA organization, the research initiatives instituted in 1997 by the scientific management constitute a complementary means of financing for scientific activities. These initiatives also reinforce pluridisciplinary cooperation not only within the Institute, but also with other research institutions. Within the general framework of INRIA's scientific policy, these initiatives aim to foster the rapid emergence of certain research topics or to give particular emphasis to those themes in which the Institute traditionally excels. Financial support for these research initiatives is for two years.

A first call for proposals at the beginning of 1997 selected 9 initiatives. With a global budget of 3.65 MF, these initiatives are concerned with the following research topics: multipoint multimedia transmission, operational inverse mode, video indexing, organ modelling for surgical simulations, tools for reliable numerical computations, short- and mid-term analysis of the variability in cardiac rhythm, fluid/structure interaction in civil and biomedical engineering, 3D ultrasound, speech signal transformations.

A new call for proposals was issued in October 1997 in order to start up new research initiatives in January 1998. The principal research directions to be considered for 1998 are: development of certified software, Internet network and application development, computer science and scientific computing, environmental applications, medical applications.
