A boost for software development

To better publicize INRIA’s activity in software development, the Institute has set up a call for proposals entitled "Software Development Operations" at the beginning of 2001. This initiative aims at supporting the INRIA teams involved in quality software development and making sure their products are widely distributed under all terms-open source or commercial license granting. Among the means granted to reach this goal are new positions at the disposal of the research teams. Young graduates looking for an initial professional experience in applied research, industry specialists or scientists from other civil service bodies, may apply for these positions.

INRIA at the origin of a new standard

The steering committee of IETF (Internet Engineering Task Force)-the standardization body of the Internet- has accepted as "proposed standard" the definition of a tunneling protocol to use satellite links as Internet traffic supports. This event from the UDLR (UniDirectional Link Routing) IETF work group, distinguishes the work of the INRIA researchers who are at the origin of this research, Walid Dabbous (project Planète) and Emmanuel Duros (UDCast). The solution proposed by these researchers is based on an encapsulation mechanism that emulates a bidirectional broadcast link on top of a satellite link. This technology has already been tested for interoperability and is now being brought to industrial standards by UDCast, a startup stemming from INRIA.
