Promoting Open Source in Vietnam

ObjectWeb was founded in 2002 by INRIA, Bull and France Télécom and is housed at the Grenoble research center. After its merger with Chinese counterpart Orientware, it has now become the OW2 international consortium. Following the merger, the ObjectWeb development team, which represented the Institute's contribution to the development, standardization and interoperability of open source middleware, was rechristened OW@INRIA. The team still represents the Institute within the new consortium. It also supports and cooperates with the Institute's teams in research and development projects, both nationally and internationally, with the objective of distributing and creating value for open source middleware technologies.

As part of this effort, the team participates in the European Foss-Bridge project involving OW2 and two other partners: Inwent, the German agency for international cooperation, and the IOIT, or Vietnamese institution for information technology. The project is part of the European program called Asie Invest, and aims to promote the open source software industry in Southeast Asia by providing training for developers, organizations and institutions working to develop open source software in Vietnam. Another objective for the project is to encourage meetings between European and Vietnamese companies that could lead to technical collaboration and business relationships. The first workshop, organized by Foss-Bridge in November, was attended by twenty-two Vietnamese companies and sixteen European companies, four of them French. The event served as an opportunity to raise awareness about INRIA and its activities in Vietnam - and it succeeded, because by the end of the workshop, the OW@INRIA development team had gained two new members for the consortium!

Franco-Russian Research Group

The 2008 year opened with the creation of a five-year international research group christened the Réseau de formation et de recherche franco-russe en STIC. This network was born out of an agreement signed in December 2007 between the CNRS and INRIA, representing France, and the Russian Academy of Sciences, the Russian Foundation for Basic Research and the Independent University of Moscow, representing Russia. Its objective is to strengthen the framework for scientific cooperation between the two countries for priority initiatives such as supporting and developing joint research initiatives, and establishing Franco-Russian doctoral and post-doctoral training courses in ICST. To this end, invitations to post-doctoral researchers and thesis students are being strongly encouraged, as is the organization of joint schools and seminars in France and in Russia.
