A Guide to Publications to Help Assessors

Assessors who are asked to determine the value of applications are not necessarily experts in the relevant specializations, particularly when the research subject is at the crossroads between several disciplines. This is especially true at INRIA, where the evaluation commission and recruitment juries are not organized according to discipline. In order to help assessors with their difficult task, the evaluation commission has decided to produce a guide of the most important publications and conferences in each field. The commission realized that the bibliometric indicators which assessors might be tempted to refer to in this type of situation are not always reliable (see Inédit No. 59). For example, its work in the area demonstrated that classifications of publications on a bibliometric basis are considerably different from classifications developed by experts in a given field. Thus was born the idea of publishing a guide of the most important publications and conferences in INRIA's scientific fields based on the opinions of specialists within the Institute. Luc Ségoufin was assigned the task of formulating the initial results of this consultation into a manual that should be released by this summer. An editorial committee will be assigned to update it regularly, ensuring that the guide keeps up with inevitable changes in research and therefore remains useful over the years.
