INRIA recently created five scientific functional departments, covering all activities involved in knowledge and technology production, technology transfer, and partnerships at the Institute. These departments have been reinforced by the appointment of deputy scientific directors and scientific advisers.
Deputy scientific directors spend part of their time (about two thirds) coordinating research, planning new initiatives and leading scientific projects in one or several theme areas tied to their domains of expertise. They are also in charge of cross-functional projects related to INRIA's national or international actions and therefore report to one of the five scientific directors.
Scientific advisers dedicate a small portion of their time (around one day per week) to a project focused on one of the Institute's strategic activities or partnerships. They report to one of the five scientific directors or to general management.
Three deputy scientific directors have been appointed:
- Marc Berthod is responsible for monitoring all research, development, transfer and partnership activities in the thematic areas of imaging, perception, interaction and virtual reality. He is also responsible for monitoring international scientific partnerships in all these areas - in this capacity he reports to the International Relations Department.
- Bernard Espiau
is responsible for monitoring all research, development, transfer and partnership activities in the thematic areas of modelling, simulation, automation and robotics. He is also responsible for monitoring ANRDs (National Activities and Action for Research and Development) and for coordinating experimental actions in all these areas ; in this capacity he reports to the Technological Development Department.
- Hélène Kirchner
is responsible for monitoring all research, development, transfer and partnership activities in the thematic areas of programming, algorithms, software security and reliability. She is also responsible for monitoring any inciting research initiatives that fall within these areas ; in this capacity she reports to the Research Department.
