Karl Tombre has been appointed as Director of the INRIA Nancy - Grand Est Research Centre on May 2nd, 2007.

In 1996, he was granted accreditation to supervise research at Henri Poincaré University in Nancy. He currently heads the Information Technology Department at the Ecole des Mines in the same city and is also head of the school of IT doctoral studies of the four universities of Lorraine. Joining INRIA in 1987, this family man has worked on the SYCO, MOVI and ISA project-teams. He is now head of the QGAR project-team, where he has been member of the board since 2005. This specialist in computer vision and image analysis, in particular in graphics recognition is behind the QGAR free software package for graphics recognition. In addition, he is editor of the International Journal of Document Analysis and Recognition and, starting this year, Chairman of the IAPR (International Association of Pattern Recognition).
