On 1st March 2007, Marc Berthod is appointed as deputy scientific director for monitoring all research, development, transfer and partnership activities in the thematic areas of imaging, perception, interaction and virtual reality. He is also responsible for monitoring international scientific partnerships in all these areas - in this capacity he reports to the International Reations Department.
After completing his engineering studies at the Ecole polytechnique in 1967 and earning a Doctor of Science degree, Marc Berthod joined INRIA in 1972. Specialised in probabilistic methods for pattern recognition, he initially focused on handwriting recognition, then on computer vision. In 1982, he set up PASTIS at the Sophia-Antipolis site. This research project centred on image pattern recognition and remote sensing. Berthod also cofounded Istar, the first French company to automatically extract topography from SPOT data. He directed INRIA's Sophia-Antipolis research unit from 1996 to 2001, becoming part of the Institute's scientific leadership in 2001. He is also a member of the Scientific Council for the Institut géographique national.
