communiqué de presse

Paris, May 18, 2004

INRIA will present the results of the CyberCars European project on June 10 and 11, on the occasion of a unique experiment consisting in testing the integration of automated vehicles within a dedicated urban network at the very heart of the city of Antibes-Juan les Pins. INRIA is the coordinator of the project.

To succeed in easing the congestion in heavy traffic zones and offer users an economical, non polluting and totally silent transportation means, INRIA and its fifteen European partners * have conducted a series of research during three years. The goal of this research was to set up a fleet of self-service, automated vehicles called cybercars, while guaranteeing security and quality of service on demand 24 hours a day.

This research in the framework of the fifth FP (Framework Program) resulted in prototype vehicles capable of moving autonomously without a driver, using an array of sensors, image processing software and other communication technology developed by INRIA and by numerous academic and industrial partners, as well as foreign design offices.

The presentation of this work will take place on June 10 and 11, 2004, during a worldwide first: for a little over ten days (June 3-13, 2004), the city of Antibes-Juan les Pins and the above mentioned European partners will organize a life size demonstration around the Vauban harbor. The automated urban transport vehicles will run in a public site together with pedestrians and bicycles for the first time.
Several interviews will be conducted with volunteer passengers that will complement the tests carried out in other European sites- Rotterdam, Bayonne and Coimbra, to give users a genuine glimpse of the future for their cities.
