Paris, November 2, 2005
Although young people are fervent users of
new technologies in their daily life, few of them try to understand
what is happening on the other side of the screen. INRIA has opened
its doors to the editors of Phosphore, for an exciting and
comprehensible discovery of all dimensions of this science in perpetual
motion.
“Is digital science your thing?” The image
of research among young people is not very enticing and scientific
degrees have lost their popularity. Yet new technologies continue to
invade the daily lives of both young and old. At the Education Exhibition,
INRIA (the French National Institute for Research in Computer Science
and Control) and the monthly magazine Phosphore (Bayard
Presse group), which targets the 15-to-25 age group, have joined their
talents to invite young citizens to look at the other side of their
screens and consoles. Result: a special 32-page, richly illustrated
supplement that will be included in subscribers’ December issue
of Phosphore (distributed in mid-November).
Designed and produced by the scientific journalists in the Bayard Presse group
and edited on the basis of research carried out by INRIA, the brochure opens
with an interview with adventurer Maud Fontenoy and astronaut Claudie Haigneré on
their experience of new technologies. It also offers an in-depth look at virtual
reality, a review of how images are made to talk, an explanation on how vision
is processed by the brain, a discovery for improved prediction of natural phenomena,
a dossier on secret codes, and even an investigation on networks. Several pages
have been consecrated to scientific studies and the testimonial of young scientists
on their profession, with references to the scientific culture site Interstices.
All in all, an attractive number designed to promote popular science and stimulate
general scientific awareness among young people, with a special accent on information
and communication science and technology.
The brochure has
also been published in a special edition, with 15,000 copies distributed by INRIA
through its contacts with young people (lectures given in secondary and elementary
schools, exhibitions, open-house visits, recruiting events, etc.).
