EuroBio 2006: the 10th European Biotech Crossroads
INRIA confirms its commitment to support life science

INRIA

communiqué de presse

Paris, October 24, 2006

INRIA is showcasing six Bio-IT projects in conjunction with five companies from the life science field and is striving to build bridges between research in computer science and Bio-Industries.

Promoting one of INRIA's convictions – Information and Communication Science and Technology constitutes a vehicle for progress in the Life Science Industry

Integrating heterogeneous data, extracting and managing biological knowledge, systems biology, modelling organs, investigating computational neuroscience - these are all subjects, skills and technologies that INRIA has been developing for many years now in areas where mathematics, computer science and life science meet.
About one third of INRIA research projects – representing almost 40 teams and more than 500 scientists - are dedicated entirely or in part to life science - from biomedical technology to multi-scale biological modelling.
This heavy commitment is proof of how INRIA is striving to demonstrate that information technology is both relevant and useful for life science and industry.

EuroBio is a unique exchange forum between players from industry, institutions and research bodies

During the Bio-IT session on 25 October, INRIA will host a round table entitled "Data integration, Knowledge Management and Modelling in the Life Sciences". European scientists and industrial players will attend to debate this issue.

INRIA will also be involved in the exhibition in the company of Aureus Pharma, Gene IT, Genomining, Genostar and Helios Biosciences – 5 dynamic companies from the bio-industry who specialise in information processing. INRIA and its partners hope to use this event to meet all players in the field and raise awareness about the benefits of instigating synergies to overcome the major technological challenges in the sector. Their objective is to contribute to the creation of a research and business ecosystem for life science industrial players.

Building a research and business ecosystem – an approach based on a transfer model with proven efficiency

INRIA has acquired renowned expertise in the field of technology transfers, particularly through its successful policy that forges strategic partnerships with major industrial groups and provides backing for the creation of technology companies. The policy’s bottom line is to bring together the conditions needed for dialogue between different players in the innovation chain - from research to products and services - and to be a driving force behind a mutually beneficial research and business ecosystem that is powered by technology transfers.

Aureus Pharma, Gene IT, Genomining, Genostar, Helios Biosciences and INRIA will be delighted
to meet and talk with you to Eurobio 2006 on the INRIA stand, LO4,
from 25 to 27 October 2006 at the Palais des Congrès in Paris.

INRIA - with its partners Opticsvalley, Génopôle and CEA - will host
the “Bio-IT” session

on 25 October 2006 from 9am to 12.30pm in room 241

About INRIA

The mission of the French National Institute for Research in Computer Science and Control is to carry out research in Information and Communication Sciences and Technologies (ICST). Through six research units located in seven major regions*, INRIA employs a workforce of 3,600 people, including 2,800 scientists (from INRIA and associate organisations). INRIA’s annual budget is €160 million (excluding VAT), 20% of which comes from its own resources (contracts, licences). INRIA plays a decisive role in five areas of research: communicative, cognitive, symbolic, numerical and biological systems.
INRIA develops many partnerships with industry and fosters technology transfers and business creation (80 enterprises) in the field of ICST, in particular through its affiliate, INRIA-Transfert, who operates four seeding funds.
International partnerships involve receiving and recruiting foreign students, as well as numerous exchanges among researchers. Priority is given to geographic regions with high economic potential: the European Research Area, Asia and North America, while maintaining basic activity with South America, Africa and the Middle East.
* Aquitaine, Bretagne, Lorraine, Ile-de-France, Nord Pas de Calais, Provence Alpes Côte d'Azur and Rhône-Alpes.
