Paris, July 11, 2007
The digital age is underpinned by two major factors: the talent of research teams and high-quality technology. Fully aware of IT potential, particularly in the healthcare field, Apple wishes to support INRIA in its research efforts by rewarding the Cardiosense3D Large Initiative Action on 11 July.
The Apple Research & Technology Support (ARTS) programme diploma will be awarded in recognition of the Cardiosense3D national action. The project develops software tools used in modelling the electromechanical activity of the heart. The teams involved are developing a customised heart simulator which will provide specialists with a 3D view of each patient's physiological parameters (contraction mechanism, electrophysiology, perfusion, metabolism).
Apple is no newcomer to corporate sponsorship. Its ARTS programme was set up to support leading European research institutes in the ICST field and help young scientists through their projects by giving them access to Apple technology. ARTS award winners receive $30,000 worth of Apple hardware, software and assistance.
Over the next 40 years, INRIA will continue to devote much of its research effort to the healthcare and life science fields, drawing on its many years of experience in modelling.
Apple has shown a particularly keen interest in INRIA's activities and wished to commend the scientific excellence of the Institute's young researchers.
Miguel Fernandez, coordinator of Cardiosense3D, will receive the prize from Massimo Marino (European Manager of the ARTS programme/Apple Europe Education and Research Team), in the presence of Richard Ramos (Education and Research Manager of Apple France) and Antoine Petit (Director of the INRIA Paris - Rocquencourt research centre).

The French national institute for research in computer science and control is the only public institute entirely dedicated to research in information and communication science and technology (ICST). It has a 3,600 strong staff - 2,800 of which are scientists - distributed in six research units across France. INRIA has an annual budget of 160 million euros excluding VAT, 20% of which comes from its own research contracts and licences. INRIA has massive influence in the following fields: "networks, telecoms and multimedia", "complex systems and software" and "modelling, simulation and visualisation". It develops collaborations with the economic world through strategic industrial partners and by setting up open forums and creating companies (80 start-ups in 20 years) - particularly through its subsidiary INRIA-Transfert, promoter of four start-up funds.
