INRIA

communiqué de presse

Paris, January 11, 2008

Forty years after its creation, INRIA’s strategy continues to focus on regional development and integration with a view to enhancing competitiveness and pushing forward ICST innovation. From 1 January 2008, the Institute is equipped with three new research centres - previously in “incubation” at INRIA Futurs - on sites in Bordeaux, Lille and Saclay.

The Institute as a whole is now composed of eight regional centres. The creation of these INRIA research centres is part of the 2008-2012 strategic plan, which sets out the institute’s scientific priorities and its strategic orientations for the coming four years.

INRIA Bordeaux - Sud-Ouest: a research centre in close collaboration with the Aerospace Valley cluster

The inauguration of the INRIA Bordeaux - Sud-Ouest research centre will take place on 17 January on the Université Bordeaux 1 campus.  On this occasion, the cooperation protocol between the Aquitaine Region and INRIA will be signed by Alain Rousset, Chairman of the Aquitaine Regional Council, and Michel Cosnard, INRIA CEO.  From now on, the INRIA Bordeaux - Sud-Ouest research centre will bring together 14 research teams that will develop strong partnerships with universities and grandes écoles across the region and will collaborate closely with CNRS laboratories: IMB and LaBRI in Bordeaux, and LMA and MIGP in Pau.

Its local integration has received enthusiastic support from the Aquitaine Region through regional government project contracts (CPERs) and through a specific cooperation convention. The centre is leading several industrial players to implement an ambitious innovation and transfer policy, particularly in the context of the global competitiveness cluster Aerospace Valley.

INRIA Saclay - Île-de-France research centre at the heart of scientific activity on the Saclay plateau

The INRIA Saclay - Île-de-France research centre is a solid entity comprised of 360 staff and 24 research teams that are all in partnerships (CNRS, Université Paris-Sud, École polytechnique, École normale supérieure de Cachan, École centrale de Paris) and enhance the intense scientific dynamic on the Saclay plateau. These partnerships have multiplied as part of Digiteo, one of the country's national networks for advanced research that is highly visible at an international level.

Research and innovation is also booming thanks to privileged relations with the CEA (Neurospin) in the joint INRIA/Microsoft Research centre and in the System@tic Paris-Région competitiveness cluster in which INRIA research teams are heavily involved. The INRIA Saclay - Île-de-France research centre is striving to become a key player in structuring this large region destined to become a global scientific cluster.

INRIA Lille- North Europe research centre: an unmistakable European dimension

Since its creation, the INRIA Lille - North Europe research centre has brought together ten research teams in the LIFL, LAGIS and Painlevé laboratories through partnerships with the Universités de Lille 1 and Lille 3, the Ecole Centrale de Lille and CNRS. It contributes to regional development by participating in competitiveness clusters, particularly the industries du commerce cluster. Since Spring 2007, the centre has been accommodated in a building of some 4000 m² acquired using funding from local and European authorities. The building will be officially opened this spring with the research centre and, at the same time, an ambitious framework agreement will be renewed with the Nord - Pas de Calais regional council. Boosted by this support the INRIA Lille - North Europe research centre will strengthen its transfer and innovation approaches and create new projects and new partnerships where the north Europe dimension will be omnipresent.

About INRIA

The National Institute for Research in Computer Science and Control is the only French public institute entirely dedicated to research in information and communication science and technology (ICST). It has a staff of 3,700 - 2,900 of whom are scientists - working in eight research centres across France. INRIA has an annual budget of 162 million euros, excluding VAT, 20% of which comes from its own research contracts and licences. INRIA has huge influence in the following fields: "networks, telecoms and multimedia", "complex systems and software" and "modelling, simulation and visualisation". It develops cooperative projects with the business world through strategic industrial partnerships and by setting up open consortiums and companies (80 start-ups in 20 years) - particularly through its subsidiary INRIA-Transfert, promoter of four start-up funds.
