Alcatel-Lucent and INRIA open their joint research laboratory for next generation networks in the presence of Mr. Eric Besson, Minister of State to the Prime Minister with responsibility for Forward Planning, Assessment of Public Policies and Development of the Digital Economy. This collaboration emphasizes the desire to improve existing networks and create the technological solutions of tomorrow to manage the inevitable growth of Internet and associated services.
The communication networks of the future will enable communication and information access at any place, at any time and from any terminal. Internet is evolving and it is still growing. The interconnection of cell phones and the ubiquitous information technology is burdening the infrastructure of existing networks, with an ever-growing number of tasks that will be difficult to manage by human intervention. The need to manage this complexity is fundamental if we want the networks—and the services they provide—to continue to expand beyond their current size, with an impeccable level of quality and security.
The virtual laboratory set up by Alcatel-Lucent and INRIA has fifty researchers and includes fifteen specially recruited young researchers. The introduction of joint management by a world-class scientist and an engineer at the heart of industrial concerns symbolizes the symmetry of the partnership around teams that will be working together to meet the major challenges of tomorrow. The implementation of this partnership through a joint laboratory is an exemplary approach and offers ideal working conditions under which to face up to long-term R&D objectives (pooling of the best teams on the basis of targeted core business, upstream knowledge of the subjects, privileged human relations).
The communication networks of the future are an important economic and scientific issue. This set of concerns is also one of the priorities of INRIA's strategic plan for 2008-2012. The research envisaged in this laboratory will enable the networks to extend their cover, capacity or quality of service while at the same time controlling their cost. The design of autonomous networks and the automation of their operation will make the networks more robust, more available, more secure and more flexible so they are adapted to the needs of the users (and not the other way round), to their uses (watching a film, surfing on Internet, communicating and sharing content with family and friends...) and to their environment (at work, in the street, while travelling...). The lines of research also relate to the field of the future uses: "spontaneous" networks created around an event, the object Internet (all everyday objects become communicating objects), information sharing in new domains like road safety, with communication between vehicles and infrastructures to avoid accidents.
