PerDiS : a middleware platform for cooperative CAD engineering
Over
the last three years, the PerDiS project (PERsistent DIStributed Store)
developed a novel middleware platform that eases cooperation within
a large-scale Virtual Enterprise.
The final PerDiS workshop will take place at CSTB in Sophia-Antipolis
(France) on 29 and 30 March 2000.
Design and engineering work increasingly involve a collaboration of
specialists from different companies, at different locations, for the
duration of a particular project. The distributed data storage, access,
consistency and security requirements of such a "Virtual Entreprise"
are not met by existing Internet software. The PerDiS consortium was
formed to address precisely these issues. The PerDiS middleware platform
makes it easy to share information within a Virtual Enterprise, and
was designed according to the requirements of the construction industry.
PerDiS is based on a persistent distributed memory model. It supports
the following features :
1. A project's data can be stored and distributed anywhere on the Internet,
2. Applications access data transparently, regardless of physical
location and distance,
3. A simple application programming interface makes it easier to
develop distributed sharing applications,
4. Distributed locking and transaction mechanisms maintain data integrity,
5. Access rights defined for each user rôle, together with
encryption mechanisms, ensure data security,
6. Support for working disconnected or over poor or slow Internet
connections,
7. PerDiS promotes design tool interoperability by supporting the
industry-standard STEP ISO-10303 data access interface.
The platform is freely available on our Internet site http://www.PerDiS.esprit.ec.org/.
This site provides access to the platform itself, to documentation and
to the complete source code of the platform and of applications.
The workshop agenda
includes : a keynote presentation, requirements for distributed cooperative
work in the building and construction industry, presentations of the
PerDiS platform, demonstrations of applications above PerDiS, usage
of PerDiS over wide area networks, and tutorials on the operation and
use of PerDiS. Attendance is free, however, registration
is required.

The workshop is organised by INRIA and CSTB (Centre Scientifique et
Technique du Bâtiment, the Building Science and Technology Centre).
The PerDiS consortium brings together INRIA (France), CSTB (France),
IEZ AG (Germany), INESC (Portugal) and Queen Mary and Westfield College
(UK), within the ESPRIT 4th Framework European Long-Term Research programme.
