Team Presentation
Joint team with University Henri Poincaré.
The MERLIN team studies human-computer interaction (HCI) with a user-centered approach. The goal is to contribute to the optimization of the ergonomic quality of interactive software. On the one hand, it aims at integrating ergonomics results into the design process; on the other hand it aims at acquiring the ergonomic knowledge required for utility and usability of human-computer interactions. The MERLIN team is pluridisciplinary, aiming at associating both ergonomics and computer science approaches to human-computer interaction.
Research themes
Study and development of ergonomic methods for the evaluation and design of interactive software. Methods are developped from existing ergonomic knowledge. The appropriateness of the methods and tools is tested experimentally. Current topics:
- Extension of Ergonomic Criteria to the Web to Virtual Environments.
- Study of the role of task models in the design process, and mental workload evaluation.
- Definition and implementation of generic on-line help strategies.
Ergonomic study of multimedia presentations and multimodal interactions. For new applications, new users, new forms of interaction, i.e., situations where current ergonomic knowledge is insufficient, research work aims at identifying new ergonomic issues stemming from technological innovation, using specific methods in ergonomics: observation, experimentation, user testing, and evaluation of mock-ups and prototypes. Current topics:
- Ergonomic issues relating to interaction with Internet.
- Multimodal interaction (speech and gesture).
- 3D design tools. Augmented reality.
- Accessibility, Design for All.
To carry out some of these studies, the MERLIN project provides a Usability Laboratory, available for internal use Theoretical and methodological research work concerns various areas: electronic commerce, design in the clothing industry, information retrieval on the Web, railways traffic control, etc. User populations concerned are mainly the general public, interface designers, and users with special needs.
