Summary training-through-research |
|||
The standard of supervision at INRIA is a guarantee of excellence in studying for a PhD or in post-doctoral positions.
Along with scientific advances and technology transfer, training young PhD students and post-docs through research is one of INRIA’s key activities. As a result, the Institute is actively involved in cooperation with higher education establishments, universities and engineering schools. Just over a thousand doctoral students are currently involved in our research projects.
Students usually work as part of an INRIA project-team. In PhD study they may also be guided toward studying under a foreign laboratory (joint thesis supervision) or in a company (for example, within the framework of a CIFRE agreement).
INRIA provides ample opportunities for students to meet researchers from
all over the world and to enjoy all the advantages of cutting-edge research
that is always open to new ideas.
Basically, the environment at INRIA is fulfilling and functions on a human
scale. The atmosphere is relaxed and everyone can be involved in social life
within the Institute. Newcomers are made to feel welcome thanks to a range
of activities designed to bring together researchers from over 80 countries.
At INRIA, research supervision, in terms of resources and human relations, is of a very high standard. The Institute is in fact very attentive to the quality of post-doctoral positions and theses produced within the framework of its research teams and, more generally, to the quality of training provided for its doctoral students, as well as to their career prospects. For example, prior to supervising doctoral students, INRIA researchers and engineers teach on various advanced courses, especially post-graduate courses, at French universities and engineering schools.
All INRIA’s initiatives aimed at young researchers (doctoral and post-doctoral researchers) are coordinated by a committee whose chairperson reports to the Institute’s Research Department and which is made up of representative from each research centre. In particular, this committee deals with the following tasks:

In 2007, many INRIA researchers won recognition for their work.
