Summary training-through-research |
|||
One of Inria’s top priorities is to integrate increasing numbers of doctoral students into its research teams.

Training-through-research is one of INRIA’s priority objectives. To achieve this, the Institute has stepped up the recruitment of doctoral students, especially for those students who have completed their Masters at a site other than that where they intend to study for their PhD. In 2006, INRIA thus deployed an original programme that resulted in the recruitment ofr 25 doctoral students. In 2007, this number rose to 40, and the recruitment drive will be developed further.
Around a thousand researchers and research lecturers now work within INRIA’s
170 project-teams. About half of these are thesis supervisors, university
professors or hold accreditation to supervise research. The others are often
called upon to jointly supervise a thesis.
On 31 December 2006, INRIA’s Human Resources Department had 1073 doctoral
students registered to study for their PhDs at the Institute. Given the usual
PhD supervision ratios at French and foreign universities, the Institute
has room to increase the number of its doctoral students further still. Our
stated objective is to achieve a ratio of one doctoral student for every
researcher or research lecturer.
