PhD study: an objective for school children and students

Planning to study for a doctorate a long time in advance is possible, provided one chooses the right options and learns how to find the right information.

A PhD can be an objective to be aimed for from school age. Four key stages have to be gone through:

• At school, future doctoral student must pass their school leaver’s certificate in the sciences before going on to study or train in a science-related subject at an institute of higher education (university or engineering schools).
• Then future PhD students must pass their university degrees (3 years’ higher education study) or have their preparatory courses (2 years’ higher education study) validated.
• Future PhD students must then study for a Master’s in Computer Science, Automatic Control and Scientific Computing (5 year’s higher education study) with a Research option (formerly a DEA in France), either following a degree, or at the same time as training at an Engineering School offering this option in the 3rd year.
• Last of all, during the final year of study or training, future PhD students should generally undertake a research project. At this stage, it is possible to carry out such a project in liaison with an INRIA research team.

Events to meet researchers

To find out about what a research career entails, it is extremely useful to be able to talk with researchers. Apart from direct one-to-one contact, many events are organised to make it easy to meet them, for example:
