Doctoral studies are closely supervised to give doctoral students every chance of success.

While studying for ar PhD, doctoral students have certain rights and duties. These are set out in a text called the “Charte de these” (Thesis Charter) or “Contrat de Thèse” (Thesis Contract).
The doctoral student is invited to sign the charter upon registering for PhD study, and must act in accordance with the provisions set out therein. The thesis director, the director of the host laboratory and the director of the doctoral school to which the student is attached also sign the Charter.
Every higher education establishment has its own charter. However, they all share a certain number of principles. The thesis charter sets out the doctoral student’s rights and obligations insofar as concerns his/her thesis supervisor, the thesis supervisor’s rights and obligations insofar as concerns the doctoral student and the doctoral student’s rights and obligations within the host laboratory.
For example, the charter defines:
Charte des thèses, a website run by the Confédération des Jeunes Chercheurs and the Guilde des Doctorants.
