1. Which jobs can I apply for and under which status?

INRIA researcher positions fall under the general civil service status and are governed

Researchers belong to one of the two following bodies:

The body of chargés de recherche, with two ranks:

The body of directeurs de recherche, with three ranks:

Recruitment is effected by means of a competitive selection. One or several selections may be organized each year for recruitment at each of the following ranks: CR2, CR1, DR2 and DR1. All these selections are open to candidates from outside of INRIA. Access to the DRCE rank is by internal promotion only.

2. How do the competitive selections work?
-----------------------

The competitive selections are open according to recruitment rank. For each rank, the available positions may be distributed among the research centres, or may be thematically oriented.

3. How can I know if a selection is going to be open?
-----------------------

A decree will be published in the Journal Officiel for each selection opening. The decree will list all available positions. It will also be advertised on INRIA's Web site, as well as in the research centres. The number of available positions, the application procedures, the deadline and deposit addresses for the application packets and the selection schedule will also be detailed on the Web site and in the research centres.

4. How can I apply?
-----------------------

Application packets can be downloaded from INRIA's Web site or requested at the Personnel Offices (SRH) of the research centres, as soon as the opening decree is published by the Journal Officiel and in accordance with the registration schedule.

5. What documents will I have to enclose in the packet?
-----------------------

Please refer to the registration methods set out in the application file.

6. Can I choose where I will be posted if recruited?
-----------------------

Candidates must indicate the research centre(s) and project-team(s) in which they wish to be appointed (or the research centres in which they would like to be placed) in their application file.

For CR1, DR2 and DR1 candidates who can ask to be posted to an existing research project-team, but can also propose to lead a new research activity at INRIA and be recruited outside of the existing research project-teams.

7. Can I file an incomplete application packet and complete it later on?
-----------------------

Yes. However, it is imperative that the attached documents or the modifications be filed before the deadline.

8. How can I check that my application has been registered?
-----------------------

An acknowledgment of receipt is sent upon filing the packet. Candidates should note that this acknowledgment of receipt in no way assures that the application is valid.

9. What are the requisite degrees and diplomas?
-----------------------

The prerequisites for a valid application are detailed in the decrees mentioned in item 1 above. Essentially, for candidates who do not belong to the body of INRIA researchers or of another public scientific and technological institution (EPST), the following rules apply:

- Holders of a PhD (or equivalent foreign diploma) can apply for the CR2 selection. They can furthermore apply for :

the CR1 selection if they have at least two years of professional experience in the field of research,*

the DR2 selection if they have at least eight years of professional experience in the field of research,*

the DR1 selection if they have at least twelve years of professional experience in the field of research.*

- Holders of a French Doctorat d'état can apply for all (CR2, CR1, DR2 and DR1) selections.

INRIA's Evaluation Committee may decide that a candidate can apply even if he or she does not hold any of these degrees, after assessing the candidate's scientific work in reference to the above prerequisites.

*The years of the research experiences have to have been accomplished in a scientific and technological public establishment or in a research laboratory or teaching for a public establishment of research. If a candidate would have carried out work of research in another public or deprived laboratory, an equivalence be able be granted to it by the director of the establishment, after opinion of the authority of qualified evaluation of the establishment.

10. Do I have to have seniority in order to apply?
-----------------------

Yes, for candidates belonging to INRIA or another EPST body of researchers (junior research scientist ). Experienced research scientists (CR1) must have three years of seniority at this rank before they can apply for the senior research scientist (DR2) rank. Exceptionally, INRIA's Director General may grant a dispensation to this rule, following the recommendation of the INRIA Scientific Council.

11. Can I apply with a foreign degree?
-----------------------

Yes, on the condition that this degree is deemed equivalent to one of the requisite degrees by the INRIA Evaluation Committee.

12. Can I apply without any degree?
-----------------------

Yes. The scientific work presented by a candidate may be considered to be equivalent to one of the requisite degrees by the INRIA Evaluation Committee, under the same conditions as above.

13. Are there any nationality requirements?
-----------------------

No, there are no nationality requirements.

14. Is there an age limit?
-----------------------

The age limit eligibility requement applying to researchers competitions has been removed (ordinance 2005-901 of August 2nd, 2005).

15. Can I apply indefinitely?
-----------------------

Nobody can apply more than three times to the CR1 rank. However, a candidate who has twice been declared eligible for this selection has the right to a fourth application.

16. How can I be informed of the validity of my application on file?
-----------------------

A list of all valid applications is drawn up for each competitive selection, following the recommendation of the INRIA Evaluation Committee. All applicants are informed by mail whether or not their application was considered valid.

17. What is the selection procedure for junior researchers (chargés de recherche)?
-----------------------

The competitive selection procedure for junior researchers chargés de recherche is in two stages: eligibility and final selection.

The Eligibility Committee or a part thereof examines the application package of the candidates and, after deliberation, draws up the list of the candidates admitted to the selection. The admitted applicants are then allowed to pass the hearings. The date of the interview will be posted on INRIA's Web site. Each candidate will receive a notice to attend the interview by mail sent to the address indicated in the application packet.

After the interview of the candidates, the Eligibility Committee will compile a list of eligible candidates, by order of merit. This list will be posted in INRIA's research centres.

Based on this list, the final selection committee, chaired by INRIA's Director General, will compile a list of selected candidates, by order of merit. The Director may draw up a supplementary list. The list of selected candidates and the supplementary list will be posted in INRIA's research centres and on INRIA's Web site.

18. What is the selection procedure for experienced researchers (directeurs de recherche)?
-----------------------

The competitive selection procedure for experienced researchers directeurs de recherche is in two stages: eligibility and final selection.

The eligibility committee will assess the scientific level of the candidates and then compile a list of eligible candidates, by order of merit. This list will then be posted in INRIA's research centres.

Based on this list, the final selection committee, chaired by INRIA's Director General, will compile a list of selected candidates, by order of merit. The Director may draw a supplementary list. The list of selected candidates and the supplementary list will be posted in INRIA's research centres and on INRIA's Web site.

19. Who are the members of the committees?
-----------------------

The rules concerning the composition of the eligibility and final selection committees are described in the decrees mentioned in item 1 above. The composition of the eligibility committees and its possible different interview sections, as well as the composition of the final selection committee, will be posted in INRIA's research centres.

20. How can I find out the results?
-----------------------

At the end of each selection phase (pre-audition selection, auditions, admission), the list of preselected, eligible and admitted candidates is displayed in all INRIA research centres and on INRIA's website. Each candidate will be informed in writing of the result of his/her candidature.

21. What about the appointments?
-----------------------

Appointments are pronounced by INRIA's Director General, according to the order of the list of selected candidates. The junior researchers (chargés de recherche) (CR2 and CR1) will first be appointed as nontenured civil servants for a duration of one year. At the end of that period, they become tenured civil servants by decision of the Director General, based on the advice of the Evaluation Committee.

The salary grading of a new recruit is based on education and seniority. However, if the candidate was already in the civil service, the starting salary grading will be the same or one notch higher than the previous one.

Appointments on the supplementary list may occur in case of the withdrawal of one of the selected candidates or if a position becomes open in between selections.

22. Where will I be posted if I succeed?
-----------------------

Based on the candidate's wishes, INRIA's Director General will decide the posting to an INRIA research centre and possibly a research project-team.

23. Can I postpone my appointment date?
-----------------------

INRIA may accept the postponement of the starting date, if the candidate requests it. In this case, the appointment only begins on the actual first day at work.

In certain cases (maternity leave, military service, parental leave for civil servants), postponement is due by right.
