INRIA recruits "R&D engineers" throughout the year on fixed-term contracts, as temporary staff members to be used by research projects and development programmes for particular contractual research tasks. R&D engineers are employed by INRIA on contracts lasting from six months to three years. There are two categories of R&D engineer:

They take part in feasibility studies and research activities to determine whether feasibility expected results can be achieved. Their aim is mainly to improve or create products and processes. They participate in designing the experiments needed to validate models and algorithms that may be used in experimental software. From simulations, tests and experiments, they can provide analyses and syntheses.Their results may be the subject of publications, papers or discussions at conferences.

They usually hold a PhD or equivalent. They have a good scientific knowledge of the field and techniques used. They must be able to work independently, and be rigorous and creative, but also practical. They must also have good critical and analytical skills. English is essential.

Their role is to design and develop useable prototypes. Following on from the tasks performed by research engineers, they transform scientific results into technological results. To do this, they work on developing an object with all the right properties to be used directly by third parties, particularly commercial companies. Their tasks include: writing and/or rewriting code, library development, porting, intensive testing, interface design, demonstration, writing documentation, etc.

They must be qualified engineers with experience in this type of post. They must be able to see the overall picture and to work methodically, and they must have good coordinating and teamwork skills. They must be practical.
