Contracts  -  Starting a Business -  Patents

Research Contracts

In 2003, 544 ongoing research contracts with partners from various sectors (see figure below) generated earnings of 19.4 M€. 318 of these contracts were signed in 2002.

Three major fields of application : production and equipment, telecommunications and multimedia, services and distribution. The percentage of contracts for these various fields is the following :

Start-up Creation

Since the creation of Simulog, the first spin-off to be supported by INRIA in 1984, more than sixty other companies have been launched. One of the most significant successes is that of ILOG, now a world leader in software components, which is listed on the Nasdaq and the New Market. In 2003, 8 spin-off were started. Taken together, these start-up have an annual turnover in excess of 195 M€, and employ over 1,700 persons.

Patents and Software Licences

At the end of 2003, INRIA already had 152 ongoing patents, and in the course of the year 5 new patents were taken out. In addition to 47 commercial licenses, some 150 software products were available free of charge, either on CD-Rom or downloadable over the Web.
